Troubleshooting: Seam Fails to Set a Code on a Kwikset Lock
Last updated: July 16, 2026
If Seam is failing to set an access code on your Kwikset lock, work through the steps below. The Kwikset API does not report why an access code failed to be created — it could be a duplicate PIN, connectivity issues, lock responsiveness, or another device-specific problem. The steps are ordered from most to least common cause.
1. Confirm the lock is online and responsive
Before troubleshooting code creation, make sure the lock is connected and responding. Test Lock and Unlock from the app. If those also fail, the issue is likely connectivity or lock responsiveness rather than code creation. Once the lock is responsive, try setting the code again.
2. Check for duplicate PINs in the Kwikset app
Open the Kwikset app and review the codes currently programmed on the lock. Seam cannot retrieve a complete list of codes added outside of Seam, so a code you're setting may conflict with a duplicate PIN already on the lock.
Note: The only way to see all codes on the lock is through the Kwikset app while physically near the lock, so it can sync over Bluetooth.
Remove any duplicate or conflicting codes, then retry through Seam.
3. Power cycle the lock
If the issue persists, restart the lock by removing and reinserting the batteries. Let it fully restart and reconnect before retrying. This can resolve temporary communication or responsiveness issues.
4. Factory reset the lock (last resort)
If several codes are failing (not just one) and the issue still persists, factory reset the lock. This clears any lingering or corrupted lock state.
Important: A factory reset removes all existing codes and resets the lock configuration — only do this after trying the steps above. After the reset, reconnect the lock to Seam and try again.
5. Still having issues?
If the problem persists, contact Seam support and let us know. Please include the lock's device ID and the code(s) you were attempting to set so we can investigate.
