Using Smart Tags with Salto KS
Last updated: June 3, 2026
To encode physical smart tags (RFID cards) for your guests, each tag must first be registered to your Salto KS site. A tag that hasn't been registered can't be scanned and assigned to a guest. This is a requirement of Salto KS hardware, not a Seam limitation.
This guide assumes you've already connected your Salto KS site to Seam. If you haven't, follow the Salto KS setup instructions first.
How to register tags
You can register tags to your site in a few ways:
Salto KS Dashboard — In the Salto KS web dashboard, go to Site > Tags and click Add Tags in the top-right corner. Follow the prompts to register each tag to your site. Registered tags appear in this list with a status of Active.
Typical hotel workflow
Initial setup — Bulk-register your tags using the dashboard or a designated reader lock.
Guest check-in — Trigger the encoding flow to pair a tag to a guest by tapping it on the lock.
Guest check-out — Remove the user from the site. Their access will become revoked automatically.
What happens if a tag isn't registered
If you tap an unregistered tag during an encode scan, Seam returns a timeout error indicating that no tag was detected on the encoder. Register the tag first, then retry the scan.
