Making Your Yale Secure Lock Compatible with Seam

Last updated: January 2, 2026

Overview

If you have a Yale Assure Lock with an iM1 module that uses the Yale Secure app for Apple HomeKit, it is not currently compatible with Seam. However, you can make your lock compatible by replacing the iM1 module with a Yale Wi-Fi Smart Module and re-pairing it with the Yale Access app.

Why Yale Secure Locks Aren't Compatible

Yale Assure Locks with the iM1 network module are designed exclusively for Apple HomeKit integration through the Yale Secure app. These locks do not provide access through the Yale Access API that Seam requires for integration.

What You'll Need

To make your lock compatible with Seam, you'll need:

  1. Yale Wi-Fi Smart Module (Model: AYR-MOD-WF1-USA or R-AYR-MOD-WF1-USA)

    • Available from Yale's website, Amazon, or authorized retailers

    • Cost: Approximately $80-100 USD

  2. Phillips head screwdriver (for module replacement)

  3. Yale Access app (free download from iOS or Android app stores)

  4. 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (for Wi-Fi connectivity)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Remove the iM1 Module

  1. Remove the interior assembly of your Yale Assure Lock from the door (you don't need to remove the exterior keypad)

  2. Remove the battery cover on the interior side of the lock

  3. Remove the batteries

  4. Locate the iM1 module - it's a small orange rectangular component installed in the module slot

  5. Gently pull the iM1 module straight out from its slot

  6. Set the iM1 module aside (you may want to keep it in case you want to use HomeKit in the future)

Step 2: Install the Yale Wi-Fi Smart Module

  1. Take your new Yale Wi-Fi Smart Module out of the packaging

  2. Align the module with the module slot in your lock

  3. Gently push the Wi-Fi Smart Module into the slot until it clicks into place

  4. Make sure the module is firmly seated and flush with the lock body

  5. Reinstall the batteries

  6. Replace the battery cover

  7. Remount the interior assembly to your door

Step 3: Remove the Lock from Yale Secure App (Optional)

  1. Open the Yale Secure app on your iOS device

  2. Navigate to your lock settings

  3. Remove or delete the lock from the Yale Secure app

  4. Remove the lock from your Apple Home app if it was added there

Step 4: Set Up with Yale Access App

  1. Download the Yale Access app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android)

  2. Create a Yale Access account or sign in if you already have one

  3. Add your lock:

    • Tap the "+" or "Add Device" button in the app

    • Select "Yale Assure Lock" from the device list

    • Follow the on-screen instructions to pair your lock

    • The app will guide you through connecting to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network

  4. Test your lock:

    • Lock and unlock your door using the Yale Access app

    • Verify that you can control the lock remotely

    • Test Auto-Lock and other smart features

Step 5: Connect to Seam

Once your lock is successfully set up with the Yale Access app:

  1. Locate your add devices pane.

  2. Navigate to the device connection page

  3. Select "Yale" as your Device brand

  4. Select "Yale Access" as your Yale service

  5. Follow the prompts to authorize Seam to access your Yale Access account

  6. Your lock should now appear in Seam and be ready to use

Troubleshooting

Lock not appearing in Yale Access app:

  • Ensure the Wi-Fi Smart Module is fully inserted and seated properly

  • Make sure your lock is within range of your Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz only, not 5GHz)

  • Try removing and reinserting the batteries

  • Reset the lock by removing batteries for 30 seconds, then reinstalling

Can't connect to Wi-Fi:

  • Verify your Wi-Fi network is 2.4GHz (the Wi-Fi Smart Module does not support 5GHz networks)

  • Make sure you're entering the correct Wi-Fi password

  • Move closer to your Wi-Fi router during setup

  • Restart your Wi-Fi router if needed

Lock works locally but not remotely:

  • Verify the lock shows as "Connected" in the Yale Access app

  • Check that your Wi-Fi network has internet connectivity

  • Ensure the lock has a strong Wi-Fi signal
